North America

North America is the third-largest continent. Asia and Africa are larger. It lies in the northern hemisphere and the western hemisphere. The continent of North America includes the countries of Canada, the United States, Greenland, and Mexico. The countries of Central America and islands in the Caribbean are included as well. North America is bordered by the Pacific Ocean on the west. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the east. To the north is the Arctic Ocean.


Canada is the second-largest country in the world. Only Russia is bigger. The United States is listed as either the third or fourth largest country, depending on what areas are counted as part of China. On some lists, China is the third-largest and the U.S. is fourth. On other lists, the two switch places.


Canada and the United States are among the world's richest countries. They produce about one-third of the world's industrial goods. Most of the people of these two countries enjoy comfortable incomes. Mexico and the countries of Central America and the Caribbean are low or middle income countries. Many of their people are poor. The continent of North America is rich in natural resources. These include coal, oil, gas, and many metals.
