Old Glory

Like a school needs a mascot, every country needs a flag. A flag helps to identify the country. It tells a story about the country. It becomes a symbol of what that country stands for. The flag of the United States is one of the most recognized flags in the world.

The flag of the United States has several parts. It has thirteen stripes of red and white. The stripes represent the original thirteen American colonies. In the upper left corner, the flag has a blue field. In the blue field are fifty stars, one for each state.

Many things have been written about the meaning of the colors. Many people believe that white means purity and innocence, red means courage, and blue means justice.
