Pine Cone Fun

"Boys," said Mom firmly, "it's a nice day outside. You should not be inside playing video games."

"Mom," said Gordon, "we've been looking forward to playing this game all week."

"It won't hurt you to wait a little longer," said Mom. "Besides, I am making up some snacks for you all, and it will be an hour before they are ready. You can stay out that long."

Controllers were grudgingly put up while the boys found their shoes and pulled them on. They slouched out the back door and stood looking blankly around.

"So, what do we do now?" asked Kurt.

"You want to play ball?" asked Gordon.

"Naw," shrugged Pete. "It would take too long."

"We could always lay out on the front yard and watch the clouds," said Andrew.

"That's kid stuff," said Kurt.

"We have a badminton set," suggested Gordon.

Gordon's younger brother Neil stood and listened for a moment. In one hand he had some stakes from the garden. In the other hand, he had a small bucket of fist-sized pine cones. Each of the pine cones was spray-painted a different color.
