Pizza with the Works

National Pizza with the Works Except Anchovies Day

Reading Comprehension for November 12

"I'll have the works," Susanna said. She and her friend Betsy were at Pizza Palace, a noisy, bright, festive restaurant where it was common to see people celebrating. Betsy was treating Susanna to a large pizza for her birthday. It was November 12.

"She's crazy," Betsy thought as she sat in the vinyl booth across from Susanna. "Doesn't she realize that 'the works' includes anchovies? Yuck!" Betsy didn't have a problem with meat, onions, or even pineapple on her pizza. But she drew the line at anchovies, even if she was treating a friend!

As if she read Betsy's thoughts, the waitress asked Susanna, "Would you like anchovies with that?"

"Hmmm," said Susanna.

"Please don't order them!" thought Betsy. She appealed to Susanna with a direct look into her eyes.

Ignoring the look, Susanna said, "You know, I've never had anchovies before. What are they, anyway?"

"They are tiny fish, usually packed in oil," the waitress explained. "To be honest, not many people order them."

Betsy could not resist adding, "They taste terrible! They are very salty, like sardines."
