Plants on the Arctic Tundra
Not many plants grow on the arctic tundra. The winter is long and cold. The summer is short so plants don't have very much time to grow. The plants grow quickly, though, because during the summer the sun shines for almost 24 hours a day.
Below the surface, the ground is always frozen. This is called permafrost. Above the permafrost, water can't soak into the frozen ground. The soil above it is always wet. Plants with long roots can't grow on the arctic tundra. There are no trees but mainly little bushes, grasses, mosses, and lichen. Mosses like the wet ground. The mosses spreading across the tundra are like soft green sponges.
