Random Help by Erin

Random Acts of Kindness Day

Reading Comprehension for February 17

Erin ignored the ringing phone. Someone else could answer. She was too busy reading her book. She wiggled down deeper into the soft armchair. She heard her mother's footsteps heading toward the phone.

No sooner had Erin found her place on the page when she stopped to listen. Was that her name being mentioned? She perked up her ears and strained to hear. What was Mom talking about?

"Yes, it's the same here. She's too busy to think about anyone else." Mom's voice paused and then continued, "It would be nice if either of them were more thoughtful."

Erin stopped listening. Was Mom talking about her? She thought about it for a moment. She hated to admit it, but it might be true. She had left her clothes unhung, and her books were scattered around the house. She thought about the chores she was supposed to do but had forgotten. Maybe Mom was talking about her.

Erin replaced the bookmark and put the book away. Maybe she could surprise Mom by doing some things without being asked. She slipped out to the kitchen. The dishwasher door was open. Some of the clean dishes waited to be put away. Erin finished the job and looked around. She knew it would be easy to find more things to do. She swept the floor and emptied the small trash can. She worked silently. She wanted to surprise Mom.
