Read Me

Alice had been trying to choose a new book to read all day. There were just too many books, though. She wanted to read all of them. Which one would be the best?

She asked her teacher. Her teacher told her to ask the librarian. The librarian gave her a list of good books. There were one hundred books on the list. That did not help. That just made it harder to choose just one book.

Alice had a stack of books on her desk. She was so sleepy. She started to put her head down. All of a sudden, one of the books said, "Read me. You will like me best." It was A Visitor for Bear talking! But books don't talk, do they?

"I am a story about a strange friendship between a bear and a mouse. At first the bear does not like the mouse. They become friends later."

"No, read me," Stinky said. "I am about a swamp monster that lives in a dirty, bad-smelling swamp. Stinky finds out that boys are not always clean!"

"No, read me first," Goose and Duck said. "I tell about a goose that thinks a boy is his mother and a duck that thinks the goose is his mother. Both of them follow the boy around for a long time."

"If you like birds, read me," Bird said. "My story is about a boy who became known as Bird because he loved to draw birds."

All of the books started talking at once. "Read me. Read me. Read me," they all said. It got noisier and noisier.

Alice could not stand the noise. "Hush!" she said loudly. "Now all of you settle down. I cannot hear all of you at one time."
