What is a roller skate? It has two or four wheels. It is a shoe or boot with wheels or a binding that can be strapped onto a shoe. With roller skates, a person can glide on a hard surface.


The roller skate was invented in the 1700s. It was made in Holland. A man wanted to go ice skating in the summer. He used wooden spools. He nailed them to pieces of wood. He put them on his shoes.


In 1760, Joseph Merlin came up with a new roller skate. He made instruments. He was an inventor. His roller skates had metal wheels.
