Rutherford B. Hayes

Rutherford B. Hayes was our nineteenth president. He was born in Ohio in 1822. He went to school to be a lawyer. He fought in the Civil War. He was a good soldier. He fought for the North. While he was still in the army, Hayes was nominated for the House of Representatives. He won this election by many votes. After he served in Congress, he was elected governor of Ohio. He served three terms. Hayes ran for president in 1876. He ran against Samuel J. Tilden. The election was the closest one in history. Hayes won by one electoral vote.
