SOS Rescue

SOS Rescue Day

Reading Comprehension for October 3

Sara shifted the backpack straps on her shoulders as she followed her father up the rocky trail. They had already been walking for a couple of hours and were well on their way to their scheduled campsite.

Suddenly, Dad tripped on a rock and stumbled sideways off the trail and down the rough slope.

"Dad!" shouted Sara, as she stood stunned for a moment. Then she peered over the edge. There she saw the still form of her father a little way down, jammed up against a tree. His leg was askew, and a couple of things had tumbled further down the hill.

"Dad!" she called again. "Are you all right?"

He groaned and finally looked up at her. "I think my leg may be broken. You will need to call for help."

"But, Dad," said Sara, "I can't shout that loud, and we don't have a cell phone. How would anyone hear me way out here?"

"Do you still have that whistle I gave you when we started out?" asked Dad.

Sara nodded.
