Sally Walker

Sally Walker is an American author of children's nonfiction books. She writes for a variety of ages, from young children's picture books to informative books for young adults. Walker is especially known for her nonfiction books in the fields of science and history. Her books are written in both English and Spanish, and she has explored a wide range of topics. Walker has written on everything from fish fossils to caves and glaciers.

As a child, Walker described herself as a daydreamer. She recalls a fifth grade report card she received with her teacher's concerned comment, "Sally often daydreams during school." When her parents questioned her, they became satisfied that young Sally, in fact, knew what was going on in class, so they elected to allow their daughter to continue daydreaming. According to Walker, "When my parents allowed me the freedom to daydream, it laid the foundation for an important part of my creative process."

Walker remembers that many of her daydreams involved books. Books have always been an important part of her life. When Walker was young, she would daydream about being an author and all the books she would write. One of her favorite places was the local public library. During the school year, Walker would visit the library at least once a week to collect more books to read. In the summer she was allowed to go as often as she wanted. She enjoyed books about horses and dogs. Mystery books were also enjoyable to her. Walker would browse the nonfiction books as well, especially books in the history and science categories.
