Sam Has Something Extra

"Go, team, go!" shouted Sam as she tossed her purple pom poms into the air. Her face was flushed with school spirit. Her best friend Beth thought Sam overdid things a little bit.

"That looks great, but you don't need to be quite so crazy. You don't have to toss your pom poms quite so high into the air! After all, we're trying out for cheerleading. We're not running for president or something!" said Beth.

The two girls wanted to be on the cheerleading squad, but they were opposites in many ways. Beth was lean and muscular. She had a natural grace that made her excel in sports. Her sleek blond hair, which she wore in a ponytail, swung jauntily behind her head like a shiny tail. Beth secretly thought that she would make the squad easily. She had doubts about Sam, however. Poor Sam would be so disappointed when Beth made the squad.

Sam, which was short for Samantha, was short and stocky. Her frizzy brown hair never did what it was told. Even now, stray strands of curls swirled around her face in rebellion against Sam's purple ponytail holder. However, most people didn't think much about Sam's frizzy hair. They noticed Sam's bright smile and easygoing nature.
