Sasha Cohen - A Real Ice Princess

Sasha is her nickname. Her birth name is Alexandra Pauline Cohen. In America, you might call someone with the name Robert, Bobby or Bob. In the Ukraine, someone with the name Alexandra might be called Sasha. Sasha's mother was a ballerina whose family came from the Ukraine in eastern Europe. Her mother named Sasha after her favorite ballerina.

Sasha was athletic at a very early age. She was born on October 26, 1984. Just like many other American girls, Sasha was enrolled in gymnastic classes in her hometown of Westwood, California. Her parents wanted to give her a variety of experiences. They also enrolled her in ice skating classes when she was just seven years old. You might think that that's the magic moment when ice skating became her whole life. But that would not be a true statement. Although she enjoyed skating, she didn't begin to take her training seriously until three years later.

That's when the hard work really began. Sasha put all of her time and effort into ice skating. She skated in the junior division until she was sixteen. She and her coaches decided that it was time to start competing against older skaters. She entered the 2000 United States Figure Skating Championship. It was there her place in skating fame was made.
