Secretary of Commerce

The Department of Commerce is part of the executive branch. The head of this department is called the Secretary of Commerce. This secretary is part of the president's cabinet. The purpose of the Department of Commerce is to promote economic growth in our country. The Secretary of Commerce advises the president on matters dealing with the economic growth of our country.


The Department of Commerce has undergone many changes in its history. It was first created as the United States Department of Commerce and Labor in 1903. Ten years later, it was renamed the Department of Commerce. A separate department was created for labor issues. It was called the Department of Labor. All bureaus and agencies that dealt with labor were transferred to the new department at this time.
