Secretary of Education

The Secretary of Education is head of the Department of Education, which was once a part of another department. It used to be part of the Department of Health and Human Services. In 1979, President Carter signed an act to create a separate department for education. It combined offices from several federal agencies. The Secretary of Education is a cabinet level position. It is part of our executive branch. The Secretary of Education gives the president advice on all matters dealing with education. Since its creation, there has been talk of getting rid of this department. Some feel that education should be left to local and state governments. For now, it remains a department in the federal government.

The Secretary of Education is fifteenth in the line of succession to the presidency. The Department of Education's mission is to promote student achievement.
