Secretary of Health and Human Services

The Department of Health and Human Services is concerned with protecting the health and well-being of all Americans. The first act to deal with the health of Americans was passed in 1798. This act was passed to give relief to sick and disabled seamen. Many changes have taken place since that time.


In 1953, a new cabinet-level department was established in the executive branch. It was called the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. The act that established this department was signed by President Eisenhower. Since its establishment, a lot of information has been passed to the American public through this executive department. In 1955, the Salk polio vaccine was licensed. The department has issued reports on many subjects, such as smoking, cancer, smallpox, and HIV and AIDS.
