Secretary of Transportation

The Department of Transportation is part of the U.S. government's executive branch. The head of the department is called the Secretary of Transportation. This person serves as a member of the president's cabinet. The secretary advises the president on all matters dealing with transportation in our country.


President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the act to create this department in 1966.


Today, the Department of Transportation's mission is to make sure that transportation is safe and fast. It also works to keep transportation efficient and environmentally sound.
