Ship in the Mist, Part 1

The Miller family's car came to a stop next to the beach house. It wasn't a large structure, but it would be comfortable enough for a family of five for the week.

Mom and Dad immediately began to unload the car. The two eldest siblings, Neil and Andrea, grabbed their suitcases and hauled them to their rooms. The third, Brian, gently removed his brand new metal detector. He carefully carried it in his arms and laid it on the bed in the beach house. Only then did he go out to get his suitcase and the shovel he would need for digging for treasure.

Neil and Andrea could hardly wait to get down to the beach. They fidgeted about until Dad finally gave the okay. They quickly changed into their swimsuits, grabbed their towels, and headed down the walkway to the shore.

Brian also changed into his swimsuit, but he had no intention of going swimming. Instead of a towel, he carried his metal detector, the directions for how to use it, and a small shovel.

The batteries were already installed, and the headphones were plugged in. Dad went over the directions with Brian until they were both clear about how it worked.

The two older siblings watched Brian as he slowly walked in a line along the shore swinging the metal detector slowly from side to side. It gave off a funny screech once, and they watched as he set the detector down and began to dig. They ran toward him, wondering what treasure he'd found. The two laughed when they saw him pull a rusted license plate from the sand. "That's some treasure," said Neil.

"Don't spend all the money from that in one place!" laughed Andrea. Then they both ran back to the water.

"Don't let those two get you down," said Dad. "When you start finding things, you can be sure they'll be asking to try it, too."
