Sir Alec Guinness

Sir Alec Guinness

Reading Comprehension for April 2

A chameleon can change its color to match its surroundings. This is to protect it from predators and confuse its prey. Sometimes a person can be like a chameleon. He may play a character part so well, you don't recognize the actor and think only of the character he plays. One such man was Sir Alec Guinness de Cuffe.

Sir Alec, as he was fondly known, was born in England on April 2, 1914. His interest in acting was evident early on. By the age of seven he was already entertaining school friends with dramatizations of stories he'd thought up.

It was Guinness's passion for writing that gave him his first job as a copywriter for an advertising agency. Even so, he studied acting on the side and got his first part in 1934 as an extra. By 1937, he had parts in three plays, including Shakespeare's Richard II.
