Soil's Primary Macronutrients

Don't forget to eat your veggies! You've probably heard your mom say that a thousand times. Why do adults always want kids to eat their vegetables? It's because veggies are full of vitamins and nutrients that our bodies need. Green plants make their own food, but they need nutrients too. They get their nutrients from the soil. Soil contains macronutrients and micronutrients. These dissolve in the water and are absorbed through a plant's roots.

Nitrogen is one of the three primary macronutrients. Macronutrients are the nutrients needed by plants in the largest amounts. Nitrogen is a part of chlorophyll. It helps to give leaves their dark green color. Nitrogen helps plants grow quickly and increases the amount of seeds and fruit that plants produce.

Phosphorus is another macronutrient found in soil. Phosphorus makes it possible for seeds and flowers to form. It also helps to protect plants from diseases and helps their roots grow.
