Spider Under the Sea

Lori let out an ear-piercing scream.

"What's wrong, Lori? Are you hurt?" Tim asked as he ran across the docking bay to where Lori was.

Lori stood frozen in place, staring at a spot on the floor. Tim looked down but didn't see anything at first.

"What's wrong, Lori?" Tim asked again. "Are you okay?"

Lori pointed to a spot on the floor where a small spider started to scurry away. "It's a spider, Tim. Can you catch it? Don't let it get away," said Lori.

"Catch it? I want to kill it," said Tim. "We don't want spiders loose in the docking bay. They could cause all kinds of trouble with our equipment," Tim pointed out.

Tim and Lori lived and went to school in an underwater colony called the PHC or Permanent Human Colony. They had lived there with their parents for several seasons and had learned to adjust to ocean-floor living. The colony had to maintain a very controlled environment. It could be dangerous to introduce new life forms. Insects or any type of pest that might be just a nuisance at a land-based home could prove to be very dangerous at the PHC.

"Don't kill it!" cried Lori.
