Staying Safe on Facebook

Facebook and other social networking sites can be fun, but it is also important to be safe when using them. Facebook can be a great way to keep up with friends far away, but it is vital to know who your friends are. Your family probably has rules about using the Internet, and these guidelines are important so you can stay safe online.

Privacy is a vital issue to be aware of when you use social networks. Do not put personal information, such as your address, your school, or other personal information on your profile page. Keep your password private, and don't share it with others. This keeps your page safe from intruders. One advantage of a more complicated password is it's harder for others to decipher. You might want to think of a password that is complex rather than simple and obvious.

Another aspect of social networking is deciding who you accept as a "friend." It might seem flattering to receive many "friend" requests, but don't accept friends who you do not know. Many times, the question about these requests is "to friend, or not to friend?" If you see something on a person's page that makes you uncomfortable, that is a reason NOT to "friend" that person.
