Thanksgiving Kitchen

Olivia and her mother were driving home from the park. It seemed that traffic was especially heavy today. At a busy intersection, they saw a man standing on the street corner. He was dressed in shabby clothes and holding a sign. The sign said, "Will work for food."

"It seems like we see someone every day asking for help," said Olivia as she gestured towards the man. "It's a little scary sometimes."

"I can understand your fear," said Mom. "Most of these people just don't have any other choice. The way the economy is and with so many jobs being lost, it is really tough for some people to make ends meet."

"I wish there was something we could do," said Olivia, "but I know we are having trouble of our own."

"Well, yes, we have had to tighten our belts. We're okay, though. Your dad and I have been wishing there was something we could do to help other people."

Olivia and her mother drove on in silence. Olivia continued to think of the man with the sign. She talked about him with her good friend, Emma, the next day at school.

"Hey, Emma, are you ready for the history test next hour?" asked Olivia as she closed her locker and fell into step beside her friend.

"Yes, I think so. I studied last night for it, so I think I am as ready as I can be. How about you?"
