The Andean Condor

Jessie has always been fascinated by South America. She's learned that it's a very diverse continent with lots of different geography -- high mountains, beaches, very cold places, very hot places, big cities, and wild jungles.


She has learned that there are many unique things about South America. One of the special things about South America is a bird - and Jessie's favorite animal of all time - the Andean condor. Andean condors are symbolic of South America. They appear on the seals of many countries, including Chile.


The Andean condor is a bird, but it is not just any bird. It is a huge bird. It's a really huge bird. An adult Andean condor can weigh as much as thirty-three pounds and can have a wingspan of up to ten and one-half feet! That's wider than the car Jessie drives to school!
