Many people think that Henry Ford built the first car in America. They are wrong. The first car in America was built by the Duryea brothers. It happened in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1893.


Charles Duryea was born on December 15, 1861. Frank was born on October 8, 1869. Growing up in Illinois, both boys had a lot of interest in mechanical things. Frank had an interest in math.


In 1888, bicycles were becoming popular. Charles moved to Washington, D.C., to build a bicycle he had designed. Frank joined him there. They later settled down to live in Springfield, Massachusetts.
