The Dust Bowl, Human-Caused Soil Erosion

Soil is like a thin skin covering the Earth's rocky surface. Soil doesn't always stay in one place, though. Wind, water, and ice can carry soil from one place to another. This is called erosion. Erosion is a natural process. Humans can cause erosion, too, or make it worse.

Plants help hold soil in place. Plant roots hold the soil around them like a net holds fish. When trees or other plants are taken away, the loose soil can be easily carried away by water or wind.
