The Great Depression in Canada

Do you get hungry? What do you do? Do you make yourself a sandwich? What if you had no food?


There was a time when few people had money. Jobs were hard to find. There was little money for food.


Many people were unhappy. What could they do?


In the 1930s, there was very little rain. Crops would not grow. People could not grow food.


The farmers could not sell crops for money. They left their farms. They went to the cities to look for work. There was no work in the cities.


This time was called the Great Depression. It hurt all the people in Canada. Some were hurt more than others. Nearly one-third of the people had no jobs.


Some people thought it would be short. It was not. It lasted for ten long years.


The government tried to help. It gave money to many families to keep them from starving.
