The Intestines

What part of an adult's body is at least twenty-five feet long? It is an organ that is coiled up in the lower part of the body just below the stomach. It's the small intestine. In your lifetime, your digestive system may process about fifty tons of food. Your intestines are an important part of the digestive system.

After the stomach is finished with the food, the mushy mass gets pushed into the small intestine. Chemicals and liquids from other places mix with the food. They help break it down into even smaller bits.

The walls of the small intestine look like there are small fingers growing from them. These aren't fingers, though. They are villi. The villi take in huge amounts of vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates, and fats.
