The Milkmaid and Her Pail

Long ago on a farm far away there lived a pretty milkmaid with big brown eyes. Her job was to milk the cows on her father's farm. Then she would take the milk to the market in town and sell it there.

She often wondered why fate had made her a farmer's daughter. Surely she was meant for something bigger and better. Surely someday she would be a fine lady who lived in a fine house with a fine husband. She would send servants to the market to buy milk for her children!

One day after she had milked the cows, she began to daydream. "When I sell all of this milk, I'll have enough money to buy at least 300 eggs." She picked up her pail of milk and walked toward the farmhouse. She needed to get ready for her trip to town. "When the eggs hatch," she thought to herself, "I'll have at least 250 chicks. When they are fully grown, I will take them to market and sell them." She smiled as a butterfly drifted by. "I will make enough money to buy a fancy party dress!" She imagined the parties she would attend and gave a little laugh.
