The Peace Bridge

What is a bridge? A bridge is usually over water. Sometimes it is over a road. Cars drive over it. People walk over it. What is peace? Peace is quiet. Peace means getting along. Peace is not war.

Beginning in 1851, many people wanted to build a bridge. They wanted a bridge to connect the United States and Canada. The bridge was to be built over the Niagara River. Plans for the bridge were made. Construction did not begin until 1925.

One end of the bridge is in Buffalo, New York. Buffalo is the second largest city in New York. That is why one of its nicknames is "The Queen City." It is at the end of Lake Erie. The Buffalo River flows through the city of Buffalo. The Niagara River does, too. Buffalo is known for its snowy winters. It also has sunny summers.
