The Red Snap Dragon, Part 2

Elise couldn't help but smile at the little red dragon. At least she looked red for the moment. Well, not a solid red. There were golden highlights on her lips, eye ridges, her facial spines, her dorsal ridges, and the ribs of her wings. She was going to be a beauty.

The dragonet slept next to the fire where her long tail curled around her. Elise kept watch over her as she continued working. The girl noticed that with every pop and crackle of the wood in the fireplace, the dragonet would bite at the air.

Elise had wondered what to name the dragon. Now she knew. Her name would be Snap.

At dinner that evening after Snap had been fed a second time, Elise's father mentioned that Arran was coming over.

Elise was sure that no good would come of Sawyer's visit and determined to listen in on the conversation. She knew he'd gotten Snap's egg for the baker. She was sure he had some nefarious plan in mind and it would involve Snap.

Elise had wanted to take the baby dragon to her room, but her father was adamant that Snap should stay in the kitchen. After all, animals did not belong in the house, but Snap would be allowed to because of her extreme youth.

Snap was bedded down in a box next to the hearth when Elise finally went to her room. Instead of dressing for bed, she waited for Arran Sawyer to arrive and then slipped back to the kitchen to listen.

"So you're the proud owner of a dragon now?" Arran's voice carried from the next room.

"It's just a wee little thing," said Tom. "It's hard to believe she will grow as large as to fit the collar you gave me."
