The Shepherd Boy and the Wolf

David was a shepherd boy. His job was to watch a flock of sheep for his master. He had to drive off wild animals that came looking for a meal. He also had to lead the flock to green pastures and small streams. He had to make sure that none of the lambs strayed from the flock.

It was a lonely job for the boy. He preferred to be surrounded by people. It was not much fun to be surrounded by sheep. If only a wolf would come, then there would be something exciting to do.

One day a thought came to David. He could cry "Wolf!" People from the village would run to help him. It would be fun to see how fast they ran to save the sheep!

David ran to the edge of the field that was closest to the village. He looked down the hillside at the rooftops. Then he took a deep breath.

"Help! Help! A wolf is here!"

The men of the village heard the cry for help. They stopped what they were doing and raced up the hill to the field. They leaped the fence into the field and looked all around.

The sheep were grazing peacefully near an old olive tree. David the shepherd boy wore a grin on his face. The men were puzzled.

"Where is the wolf?" they asked.

David shook his head. "There is no wolf. I just wanted to see how fast you would come if I needed help."
