The Sun

There are some things that make life possible on Earth. You and other living things need air. You need water and nutrients. These things are necessary for life. Is there anything else? There is. It is something that is not here on Earth. You depend on it every day. It is the brightest object in our sky and in our solar system. It is the sun.

The sun is a normal star. It is just like the other stars we see in the sky at night. It is much closer to us than any other star. It is the "anchor" of our solar system. Its mass causes the gravity that holds all the planets in their orbits around the sun.

The sun is much bigger than Earth. About 1,000,000 Earths could fit inside the sun! The mass of the sun makes up more than 98 percent of all the mass in the solar system! That sounds really huge, doesn't it? Compared to other stars, though, it is not so big. It is about average for a star.
