The Two Fellows and a Bear

Two young fellows, students at a local college, decided to drive up to the mountains one weekend. There were several hiking trails they could take through the woods. What a great way to get away from the stress of homework!

Eddie, the taller of the pair, teased his short friend, Rick, about the wild animals they might see.

"You never know what might jump out at you," Eddie said with a grin.

"That's not funny," Rick replied nervously. "You're the faster runner! I'd be a goner."

Eddie slapped Rick on the back. "We're buddies! I wouldn't run off and leave you to face a wild animal on your own. I'd stand there with you and stare that bad boy down!"

It was a pleasant hike. A slight breeze rustled through the foliage. Birds twittered high in the trees. Dry leaves and acorns made crunching sounds underfoot.

Rick had just started to tell Eddie about a smart girl in his speech class when he heard something begin thrashing its way through the bushes and trees. He stared wide-eyed at Eddie.

Both fellows turned to face the direction of the noise. A large black bear rushed out of the woods and onto the trail!
