The Unbelievable Sport of Toe Wrestling

In the wide world of sports, there is one competition where people go toe-to-toe -- literally! Toe wrestling may not have made it into the Olympics yet, but it is a fun, wacky sport.

Toe wrestling looks a bit like arm wrestling. Competitors sit across from each other. They have their feet on a small wooden frame. They lock toes. Then they try to force their opponent's foot to slap a bookend on the side of the frame. Each match has three rounds. The person who wins the most rounds wins the match. Toe wrestling has its dangers. Participants can sprain their ankles. They can break their toes. To prevent scratches, competitors must trim their toenails before a match. Some competitors train for this event, but exactly how they do that remains a mystery.

The world championship is held each year at the Bentley Brook Inn in Derbyshire, Great Britain. The event is called the Ben & Jerry's World Toe Wrestling Championship. The proceeds from the event go to a charity called When You Wish Upon a Star. This charity helps children with life-threatening illnesses.
