The World's Greatest Pie

Reading Comprehension for October 1

What is your favorite food? Many kids may say pizza. October is National Pizza Month.

Pizza started out as flatbread. People in Greece baked it on stones in a fire. The toppings were spices and olive oil. In the 1800s, pizza was being sold on the streets in Italy. These pizzas did not have many toppings. They did not cost much money to make. They were made for the poor people to eat.

There are many stories about pizza. One story is about Queen Margherita. She was the queen of Italy. In 1889, a pizza maker named Rafaelle Esposito made a special pizza just for her. It had red tomatoes. He put white cheese on it. He topped it with green basil. Red, white, and green are the colors of the Italian flag. He called it Pizza Margherita. The queen loved it! This pizza is still being made today. It can be found all over the world.
