Ulysses S. Grant was our eighteenth president. He was born in Ohio in 1822. He went to West Point. This is a military academy. He didn't want to go to school there. He served in the Mexican-American War. He was a good soldier. He served his country many times. Grant was a general during the Civil War. He was in charge of the Union Army when the South surrendered. He became president in 1869. The voters thought of him as a war hero. He ran the country much like he had run his army.
