Vegetable Food Group

Foods in the vegetable food group help your body in many ways. Any vegetable or juice made from 100% vegetable juice is included in the vegetable food group. Vegetables can be eaten raw or cooked. They can be whole, cut-up, or mashed. They can be fresh, canned, frozen, or dried. Girls ages nine to thirteen should eat 2 cups of vegetables each day. Boys of the same age should eat 2 1/2 cups each day. One cup of raw or cooked vegetables or one cup of vegetable juice is considered a one-cup serving. Two cups of raw, leafy greens, such as lettuce or spinach, are equal to a one-cup serving of vegetables.


Vegetables are divided into five different subgroups. One group is the dark green vegetable group, such as broccoli, spinach, or romaine lettuce. A second group is the red and orange vegetable group, such as tomatoes, carrots, and squash. A third group is the starchy vegetable group, such as corn, green peas, and white potatoes.
