Vera B. Williams

Some people find the job that they are meant to do early in life. They spend their whole lives doing a job that they love. Others need a little more time. They don't find that job until they are much older. That is how it happened for Vera B. Williams. She was almost fifty years old when she started writing and illustrating books.


Vera B. Williams was born in 1927. She grew up in New York City. She has always loved art. There was a community center in Vera's neighborhood when she was growing up. She learned a lot about art there. She acted. She danced. She painted. She thought it was one of the greatest places in the world. One painting that she made there was chosen to be put on display at a museum. This was a great honor. She was only nine years old! Her painting was hung in one of the best museums in the world. Many people saw it. Some of those people were very important. The First Lady visited the museum. She saw Vera's painting. She even asked Vera to tell her about the name of the painting. Vera was very proud.


A few years later, Vera was invited to join a special high school. It was a school for artists. When she was there, she learned about designing books. It was a skill that she carried with her for years. After high school, Vera went on to college. She went to a college that believed that art was very important. She studied graphic arts while she was there. It is the study of making prints and drawings.
