Washington Monument

The Washington Monument stands tall. It is in Washington, D.C. It was built to honor George Washington. Many people loved him. He led our country in the fight for independence. He was the first president of the United States. People wanted to remember him for his hard work.


The monument took many years to build. It was started in 1848. The first design was an obelisk. It was surrounded by a circle. The circle would be made from pillars. Washington would be on a chariot. It would be on the top of the circle. Building stopped because they ran out of money. They started again after the Civil War was over. The design was changed before they started building. Today it is the shape of an Egyptian obelisk. The circle of pillars was never built. It was opened to the public in 1888.
