Many people may not know that wetlands are a natural resource. Other names for a wetland are swamp or marsh. Wetlands are home to many animals. They have other important functions, too. Wetlands store water to prevent flooding. They act like giant sponges. They soak water up and let it go as needed. When wetlands do this, they clean the water. This process can filter out pollution. Wetlands can be home for many different species of animals. Wetlands were drained in the past so that the land could be used in other ways. Today, people know how important wetlands are.
