What Are Warm Blooded Animals?

You may have heard it said that some animals are warm blooded. This means that their body temperature stays about the same most of the time. Their body temperature doesn't depend on the temperature outside. Animals that can control their body temperature are called warm blooded. Scientists like to use a different word for them. They like the word "endothermic."

Vertebrates are animals with backbones. Vertebrate animals are put into five main groups. Mammals and birds are two of these groups. Fish, amphibians, and reptiles are the others. Only two of these five groups are endothermic-- animals that can control their body temperature. They are birds and mammals.
