What Is a Stroke?

Caption: MRI shows bleeding in the brain at bottom left.

A stroke is like a heart attack in the brain. It happens when the blood vessels that carry blood to the brain burst or develop a clot. This stops blood from flowing to part of the brain. Without blood, those brain cells do not get the oxygen that they need. They quickly begin to die. If someone has a stroke, it is important that he or she get help quickly. Early treatment can reduce the damage done to the brain and can even save his or her life!
