Why Be Normal?

Penelope looked at her reflection in the watering trough and sighed. She hated to be reminded that she was not the same color as all the other pigs in the pen.

"Hey, Sunshine," Peter Pig said, sidling up to Penelope.

"My name is not Sunshine," Penelope said. "I wish you'd stop calling me that."

"Why? What's wrong with Sunshine?"

Penelope looked evenly at Peter. "You call me that because I am yellow, not pink like all you other pigs."

"What's wrong with being yellow?"

"It's not normal!" Penelope grunted.

"Why be normal?" Peter asked.

Penelope looked at Peter strangely. "Doesn't everyone want to be normal? To be accepted?"

Peter looked out through the fence before answering.

"I sometimes wish I wasn't so normal. It feels boring to me to be just like everyone else."

Penelope wrinkled her nose. This confused her. Peter had never shared this feeling before.
