Wind Cave National Park

South Dakota has lots of things to explore. Wind Cave National Park is a national park in South Dakota. This park is about forty minutes from Mount Rushmore and Jewel Cave. It borders the Black Hills National Forest and Custer State Park. Wind Cave is one of the longest caves in the world! It is the third longest cave in the United States.

Native Americans knew of the opening of this cave for many years. The first recorded finding of the cave was in 1881. The men who found the opening heard a whistling noise. When they went to find out what the noise was, one of their hats was blown off by the wind coming from the cave. A few days later, they brought friends to see what they had found. This time, the hat was sucked into the cave. Today we know that changes in atmospheric pressure cause the wind to blow into or out of Wind Cave.
