Working Like a Dog--Really?

Brandon stopped to wipe the sweat off his forehead. "Whew," he said to himself. "This is quite a project."

Mom came out with two glasses of lemonade. Handing one to Brandon, she said, "Here you go, honey. Why don't you take a break?"

Brandon reached out and took the cold glass and held it to his forehead. He sat down on the bench. "Thanks, this is great."

"You've been working like a dog today!" Mom commented as she sat down next to him. "How's the project going?"

"It's progressing fine. Once I'm finished digging the hole, we can set up the form and then pour the concrete for the floor of the shed."

Mom and Brandon sat in silence for a moment.

"I wonder where the phrase 'working like a dog' came from," Brandon said. He pointed at their golden retriever, Goldie, who was basking in the sun. "Goldie loves to be lazy!"

Mom smiled. "Yes, but as soon as you get up, he will follow you wherever you go. He'd play non-stop if you paid attention to him."
