By Jody Williams
1     There are many famous explorers. Many people know about Christopher Columbus. Others know that Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon. Who was the first person to get to the North Pole? This is a hard question. The history books say Robert Peary was first. Other experts say it was someone else.

2     An explorer is a person who travels to a place that is not known by others. Explorers discover. Robert Edwin Peary was an American explorer. He explored the Arctic. It was his dream to be the first person to travel to the North Pole.

3     Robert Peary was born in 1856. He was born in Pennsylvania. He moved to Maine when he was in high school. He went to college. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1881.
