Is It Real?

By Jody Williams
1     What does a basketball team look like? A basketball team has five players on the court. The court is shaped like a rectangle. A ball is used to play the game. The players wear uniforms. They shoot the ball. They score points. They work together. One team was unique. One player was a bit different.

2     In 1927, a basketball team was formed in Chicago, Illinois. Abe Saperstein started the team. It was called the Harlem Globetrotters. Harlem is in New York City. It was known for its African-American culture. The team was an all-black basketball team.

3     The team started as a serious team. If the Globetrotters were winning, the players would have fun. They would clown around with the ball. They would do tricks. The fans liked the tricks. Soon, the team became known for the tricks. The players would use more than one ball. They would juggle the basketballs. They would spin the basketballs. They would do balancing tricks. They would make trick shots.
