Please Water Me!

By Beth Beutler
"I'm so dry!" Terry Tulip said to Doris Daffodil.

"I know what you mean," Doris said. "Do you think she forgot about us?"

     "I sure hope not!"

The flowers were talking about their owner, Mrs. Waterman. She had lovingly planted them back in the fall, and they were so glad to be out from under the dirt for awhile. Terry was a bright, rich red color with yellow stripes throughout. Doris was a sunny yellow with a well-formed trumpet blossom. They'd tried their best to look lovely in spite of the dry spring.

"It's been a pretty dry season," Terry observed. "I'm really surprised that my colors came out so deep."

"Me, too," Doris agreed. "Maybe the extra snow this winter helped us store some moisture."

"That could be," Terry said. "Even so, I'm feeling pretty dry now. If I don't get some water soon, some of my petals may fall off sooner than they normally would."

"I may just wilt away myself," Doris said.

Both flowers began to droop, depressed that their already short life above ground might be further shortened by lack of water.
