The Andean Condor
By Kathleen W. Redman
1 Jessie has always been fascinated by South America. She's learned that it's a very diverse continent with lots of different geography -- high mountains, beaches, very cold places, very hot places, big cities, and wild jungles.
2 She has learned that there are many unique things about South America. One of the special things about South America is a bird - and Jessie's favorite animal of all time - the Andean condor. Andean condors are symbolic of South America. They appear on the seals of many countries, including Chile.
3 The Andean condor is a bird, but it is not just any bird. It is a huge bird. It's a really huge bird. An adult Andean condor can weigh as much as thirty-three pounds and can have a wingspan of up to ten and one-half feet! That's wider than the car Jessie drives to school!
